Canal du Midi Cruise from Carcassonne to Castelnaudary

Barge cruise info

Our preferred itinerary is from Carcassonne to the Summit of the Canal du Midi, passing through the country town of Castelnaudary. This section of the Canal is beautiful, mostly tree lined with fabulous view across the countryside. We pass through locks everyday of this cruise (21 locks many of which are multiple basins) as we climb and make our way to the very highest point of the canal, the Seuil de Naurouze. As one of the oldest canals, the Canal du Midi follows the contours of the land, and so meanders through the scenery giving an outstanding and relaxing cruise. This lesser known stretch of canal is the real treasure of the Canal du Midi, where time seems to stand still in a serene and peaceful way.

We offer an alternative cruise itinerary from Le Somail (near Narbonne) to Carcassonne. This section of canal can be much busier and a little less shaded but we will do our best to make sure every night we moor out of the way to ensure the perfect view for your evening meals.

About Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi is a 240 km long canal in Southern France from Toulouse to the Mediterranean. Originally named the Canal Royal in Languedoc and renamed by French revolutionaries to Canal du Midi in 1789, the canal is considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century.
